Detailed instructions for use

I. Queries

Name search

Enter a locality name or its fragment (at least three characters), and choose a search option (starts with / matches / contains / ends with the name you typed in). E.g. for the search term “banya” the different search options give the following results:

Capitals are optional: “budapest” and “Budapest” give the same hit. Search terms are recommended to enter without diacritical marks, as stored names are retrieved by the program both with and without diacritical marks (e.g. Úrkút can be found with “úrkút” és “urkut” search terms), but an incorrect usage of the diacritical marks may cause an unsuccessful search. Hyphen must be replaced by a space in searches without diacritics (e.g. “róka-hegy” or “roka hegy” but not “roka-hegy”).

Other searches

From among the other search possibilities, feature, country and the type of the administrative unit can be selected from the corresponding drop-down lists. Having selected the type of the administrative unit, its name should be entered in the proper box. (Search option is “starts with”, therefore only the first few letters of the name of the administrative unit should be typed in, provided that it is a unique sequence among all the names. Do not use diacritical marks and write spaces instead of hyphens.)

South-western and north-eastern co-ordinates (degree and minute) of the defined rectangle should be entered for co-ordinate rectangle search.

Combined search

(1) Name search and the other searches can be combined. Any kind of search can be omitted from or included in the combination. Examples:

(2) Co-ordinate rectangle search can be combined with feature search

II. Display of search results

General remarks: Search is performed among all stored name variants, whereas the initial list and the full data set give only the latest name data (usually the actual name). This may obscure the relation between the search term and the results, e.g. results for the name search “Kisbánya” are Băișoara, Banky, Chiuzbaia, because the (official or unofficial) Hungarian name of these localities was Kisbánya.

1) Results, initial list

Search results are first displayed in an initial list containing only a selection of the data. Hits are arranged alphabetically (disregarding diacritics) according to the “latest name data” column. Data shown are country, province, county and feature of the locality. Full data set and name variants belonging to locality names can be displayed by selecting the desires name(s) and clicking on the proper button.

Attention! One must select the locality name even if there is only one name in the list.
